No Shortcuts, Just Grit- Amit K Toppo’s Climb to the Top

When Amit K Toppo talks about hockey, his voice carries the calm conviction of someone who has fought quietly, step by step, to carve a place for himself on the turf. The Vedanta Kalinga Lancers player stands as one of Odisha’s promising young names, having turned early struggles into the drive that took him to national triumph.

“I started a little late,” he admits with modesty. “We used to play in the village, but I wasn’t that interested then. Later, when I went to the hostel, my friends were playing hockey. That’s when I started liking it.”

Early Life and First Steps

Born and raised in Rourkela, Odisha, Amit’s journey into hockey wasn’t a straightforward one. Financial challenges were a daily reality, but family and community helped him stay the course. “There were some problems at home, but the village supported us. My parents also supported me a lot.”

What followed was a gradual, patient climb. After being selected in trials at the State Hockey Academy, Amit spent years refining his game. “Our coach was Kariappa Sir. We practiced there, then played in the senior national trials.”

Amit’s persistence was tested early on. “The first year I didn’t make it to the team, but the second year, after the trials, I came to the senior national team. We went to Chennai and won the gold medal. That was a proud moment.”

Learning and Growth

Amit’s growth as a player has been shaped by the mentors he found along the way. Among them, Kariappa BJ, a key figure in Odisha’s hockey ecosystem and part of Vedanta Kalinga Lancers, has had a big influence. “When we came to the hostel, he was coaching the seniors. We practiced with them. He always told us to focus on our finishing and work together.”

His dedication eventually earned him a place in the Vedanta Kalinga Lancers team, a lineup that includes international stars from India, Belgium, Australia and the Netherlands. Sharing the turf with such experienced players was both challenging and inspiring. He admits, “At first, I was a little scared. I thought, how will I play with such big players? But they all encouraged me. They said, play with confidence, don’t be afraid of mistakes. That helped a lot.”

Amit enjoys recalling moments from the season, from training sessions to post-match analysis that helped him mature as an athlete. “After practice, I used to ask them about my game. They used to tell me, be open, try new things. That made me more confident.”

Playing for the Home Crowd

The 2025-26 season was special for Amit. Having started his professional journey from Odisha, returning home to play in front of local fans was a full-circle moment. “Winning the trophy in Bhubaneswar was a good moment. It was special to win in front of my home crowd in the first season itself,” he says.

For a simple young man from Rourkela, these moments mean more than medals. “I used to live in hostels where the seniors guided me. Now, I want to do the same for the younger kids.” When he visits his village, he makes it a point to talk to children. “I tell them to practice. The problem in villages is the lack of proper grounds. But when I play with them and guide them, they enjoy it.”

Off the Field

Amit’s life isn’t all about hockey. A history student by education, he enjoys travelling and exploring Odisha’s food and culture. “I love to travel and eat. If I hadn’t been a hockey player, I would have joined the force.”

And somewhere in that modest reflection lies the story of a boy who started late, played with heart, and stood tall among champions, one match at a time.
